Bytes of Experience - CIOs Unplugged - S01-E10 - IT Is Something You Do With People, Not To Them
I would recommend the entire series. There is a lot about why IT teams struggle to be seen as strategic partners rather than cost centers, and what it actually takes to build the culture, communication habits, and trust that make that shift possible.
This episode summarizes several items that were also covered in previous episodes.
- Be a translator - connecting IT to the boardroom or academics is needed to be a strategic enabler.
- Start with why, not what - this earns trust and helps make folks part of the solution. (Lots of Simon Sinek call outs)
- Connect before the crisis - Proactive presence, before anything goes wrong, is what creates resilience
- Beware the culture of fear - Aversion to enabling/turning on features is a cultural failure. It requires psychological safety and leadership to fix.
- Leadership is clarity, not control - something repeated in nearly every episode so far. Shared leadership means giving clear direction and accountability structures, then getting out of the way so subject matter experts can operate.
- Accountability vs agency - “If it’s everyone’s job, it’s nobody’s job" - having someone accountable doesn’t have to prevent agency. It requires communication and group ownership.
